Human biospecimens to accelerate Neurodegenerative Diseases Research

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive and most common form of dementia. It is among the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 50 to 70% of dementia cases with no current cure. There is an accelerating worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, or prevent it from developing. Hundreds of clinical trials are on their way to find cure for this disease.

Getting More from Human Gene Expression Data
OmniViz Visualization Software Reveals New Gene Expression Patterns that can Influence Drug Development

The sequencing of the human genome has identified a vast number of potentially interesting targets for drug development. The challenge is to evaluate these targets and select those that are relevant to human disease. An important step for the evaluation process is to identify where these targets are expressed, and to link this expression to potential therapeutic uses. This evaluation is greatly aided by the provision of a) high quality gene expression data and b) sophisticated software tools for identifying targets with interesting expression patterns.

Spotlight interview with Asterand's Dr. Keith Page, Department Head, Molecular Pathology

For those who may not know who you are, could you tell us a bit about yourself, and what you do at Asterand?

I lead the Molecular Pathology Department and have been with the company (Pharmagene then Asterand) for over ten years. My background is in Neurobiology and I’ve held post-doc positions in several high profile and highly productive groups (notably Mass Gen in Boston and The MRC Centre for Brain Research in Cambridge, UK). The Molecular Pathology group performs research services for clients and we aim to be the best at what we do, both in data quality and the quality of interaction between ourselves and our clients.
