Spotlight interview with Asterand's Dr. Keith Page, Department Head, Molecular Pathology

For those who may not know who you are, could you tell us a bit about yourself, and what you do at Asterand?

I lead the Molecular Pathology Department and have been with the company (Pharmagene then Asterand) for over ten years. My background is in Neurobiology and I’ve held post-doc positions in several high profile and highly productive groups (notably Mass Gen in Boston and The MRC Centre for Brain Research in Cambridge, UK). The Molecular Pathology group performs research services for clients and we aim to be the best at what we do, both in data quality and the quality of interaction between ourselves and our clients.

Your staff in the Molecular Pathology dept; what do they each bring to the table?

I'm very fortunate in that Molecular Pathology is an exceptionally strong team. Collectively, we offer an extensive knowledge of human anatomy and histopathology and particular areas of specialization in neuro and molecular biology, biochemistry and immunology. We are commercially astute and contribute very effectively to the sales process.

How does this benefit customers and how would this set Asterand's human tissue-based research services platform apart from the competition?

The broad scientific background within the group is invaluable in tackling the range of projects our clients approach us with. Many of our projects are highly customized and our clients appreciate dealing with scientists experienced in designing studies that specifically answer their questions.

What do you see as "up & coming" for the future of Asterand's human tissue-based research services?

I see our GLP accreditation as something which will fundamentally change the way Molecular Pathology operates. It will require us to be more exacting than we already are in all areas in which we work. Initially, it will only affect the immunohistochemistry services but there will be reverberations throughout the business. There is a second potentially very important new market in ‘Research Product Validation’. In this, we plan to test new antibodies, kits and assay reagents to support the marketing efforts of our clients. One attractive potential outcome of success in this market might be recognition of the Asterand butterfly as a mark of quality, and, naturally, this will increase the profile of our brand leading to benefits throughout the organization.

On the personal side; what does Keith Page do for recreation or hobby?

I have three sons all under 12…so hobby-wise, whatever they’re doing…
